Former East Carolina University golfer Jackson Spires wrapped up a near wire-to-wire finish to win the 65th annual North Carolina Amateur title on Saturday.
Spires played for ECU from the 2013-14 season to the 2017-18 season before becoming a volunteer assistant coach. He led after the first round of play, which began on Wednesday at The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro. He was tied for the lead after the second round, shot a 66 on Friday and a 70 on Saturday to finish at -9, two shots ahead of Mykhailo Good.

He had two bogeys in the first five holes, sandwiched between a birdie on No. 3. He had birdies on No. 15 and No. 16 to close it out.
He won $950 for the victory.
