Spring Training: Williams has good last outing, Burleson hits third homer

by | Mar 20, 2025

ECU alum Gavin Williams has had such a good Spring Training that one sub-par outing was bound to happen sooner or later.

The Cleveland Guardians pitcher started Wednesday against the Athletics. He went 4.1 innings, giving up three runs, all earned, on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks in an 8-3 loss.

Williams didn’t factor in the decision as the A’s scored four runs in the seventh. Williams gave up a two-run homer in the third inning but Cleveland rallied in the fourth, taking a 3-2 lead when Williams left the game.

It was likely his last Spring Training game since the season starts Thursday. He finished with 21 strikeouts in 12.1 innings of work, a 2.92 ERA, eight hits, four runs (all earned) and just four walks.

Burleson hits third homer of Spring Training

One thing is certain: Alec Burleson sure has rounding the bases down pat in Spring Training.

The St. Louis Cardinals score hit his third homer of the season on Wednesday. So far, every homer he hit in Spring Training has been a solo shot.

The homer came in the third inning and was launched after he just missed one in the first inning. He hit 21 homers last season for the Cardinals.

The homer puts him tied for third with several other players in spring training. Vinny Capra of Milwaukee came into Wednesday with five homers.
