On Monday, Rangers closer Luke Jackson was hit on the wrist of his throwing hand on a comeback liner and has been out of action. Reliever Chris Martin came in but pulled himself after one pitch for what was later diagnosed as right elbow tightness.
Granted, the Rockies are not the best team in the league, sporting a 7-36 record after Wednesday’s 8-3 loss to the Rangers. However, Texas was in a pickle of sorts with the Rockies trying to rally.
In came Armstrong, who was called to pitch the ninth inning. He struck out the side to wrap up the 4-1 victory. According to NolanWritin.come, the Fansided page for the Rangers, Armstrong could be the team’s closer while Jackson is out.
Jeff Speicher wrote in part, “Armstrong was in total command of his arsenal from the get-go and quickly struck out the side, pinpointing a 94 miles per hour fastball and locating the occasional off-speed pitch. It was a strong statement by the pitcher that he could assume the closing role for the foreseeable future. With Jackson and Martin leaving with injuries on consecutive nights, it may be his job to lose.”
