Pirates in MLB: Williams doesn’t get decision, Spivey joins Triple-A Columbus

Gavin Williams got his first start for the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday but did not factor in the decision.

The ECU alum pitched the first five innings in the Guardians’ 4-3 loss to Kansas City. Williams went five innings, giving up two runs, both earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk. He now has a 3.60 ERA.

Burleson scores run in Cardinals’ victory

Alec Burleson drew a walk and scored his first run of the season as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Minnesota Twins, 5-1, on Saturday.

It was also Alec Burleson Bobblehead Day in St. Louis. Burleson drew his walk in the sixth, moved to second on a single by Ivan Herrera and scored on Lars Nootbaar’s single to center.

He went 0-for-3 overall and is now batting .143 for the season.

Hoffman sees first action for Blue Jays

Jeff Hoffman saw his first action of the season for the Toronto Blue Jays in a 9-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.

Hoffman pitched the ninth inning, giving up a hit and striking out two.

Carter Spivey joins Guardians’ Triple-A Columbus team

ECU alum Carter Spivey has been moved up to Triple-A Columbus within the Cleveland Guardians’ system.

Spivey was 8-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 24 starts last season for the Lake County Captains in Double-A last season.

SB Nation’s CoveringTheCorner.com has Spivey among the top 20 pitchers in the Guardians’ system.

Clayton McCullough’s Marlins win again

The Miami Marlins won in dramatic fashion again, scoring a run in the bottom of the 12th inning to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-4, on Saturday.

ECU alum and Marlins Manager Clayton McCullough is now 2-1 on the season. He’s receiving a lot of praise for his work during the series with the Pirates.
