Pirates in baseball: Zach Agnos wins in first meeting with Marlins, Connor Norby

by | Jun 3, 2025

Monday was a relatively quiet day for most of baseball … except for one unique matchup.

Two of East Carolina’s top performers in Major League Baseball took the field against each other as Zach Agnos and the Colorado Rockies picked up a 6-4 win over Connor Norby, Clayton McCullough and the Miami Marlins. It’s the first time the two teams have met this season.

While it was the first meeting of the season between the two former Pirates teammates, the game was also the first since Agnos’ grandfather passed away on May 27. Agnos left the team after Monday’s game to attend the funeral in Richmond, Va.,. on Wednesday.

“I’m a man of faith,” said Agnos, via MLB.com. “I believe he’s watching every game, and he’s with me every step of the way.”

Colorado got a run in the top of the ninth to extend the lead to two runs. Agnos then came on and gave up a bloop single to Agustin Ramirez. That forced out Jesus Sanchez at second before Agnos got Kyle Stowers in a double play to close out the win.

For his part, Norby was quiet at the plate, going 0-for-4 while playing third base. The Marlins fell to 23-35 under McCullough while Agnos and the Rockies (10-50) reached double-digit wins for the first time.

Agnos dropped his ERA to 1.50 with his fourth save.

“I can’t put it into words,” Agnos said. “I know [my grandfather] is not here physically, but I feel his presence tonight. I feel my dad’s presence every single time when I’m out there.”
