Pirates in baseball: Zach Agnos gets save as Rockies top Yankees at home

by | May 24, 2025

A unique night for the Colorado Rockies was wrapped up Friday with ECU alum Zach Agnos picking up his third save of the season in a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees.

Every Colorado Rockies win this season has been seemingly celebrated simply because of the team’s struggles this season. Colorado is now 9-42 overall, the worst record in the majors. Since Agnos was promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque on April 20, he has had three saves and pitched in one other win, helping factor in nearly 50% of the team’s wins this season.

He came on in the ninth inning, forced two groundouts around a walk then got the final batter to line out to end it.

According to the Associated Press, at 9-42, the Rockies have the most losses through 51 games since 1901. But they now also have a chance at something else — their first series win of the season (they’re currently 0-16). That is, if they can beat the Yankees either Saturday or Sunday.

Carter Spivey

He made a rare start for the Akron RubberDucks and got the win in a 5-0 victory over Altoona.

Spivey started the second game of a doubleheader, pitching the first four innings. He gave up two hits, walked three and struck out two to lower his ERA to 3.06.

Though it was his first start of the season, he had 24 career starts with Lake County in 2024, going 8-1 with a 3.32 ERA over 124.2 innings. He gave up 46 earned runs on 104 hits with 48 walks and 96 strikeouts.

Josh Grosz and Josh Moylan

ECU alum Josh Grosz had another quality start for Hudson Valley in a 10-1 win over Winston-Salem.

He pitched the first seven innings to get the win, improve his record to 3-2 and drop his ERA to 3.60. He gave up a run on four hits with eight strikeouts. The run was a solo homer in the second inning. After that, Grosz struck out two in the third, two in the fourth and two in the sixth.

So far in May, he’s 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA in four starts. He has pitched 23.1 innings, giving up 10 earned runs on 21 hits with 26 strikeouts and four walks.
