Pirates in baseball: Shawn Armstrong bounces back, gets win for Rangers

One day after a hard-luck loss, East Carolina baseball alum and Texas Rangers pitcher Shawn Armstrong picked up a win over the Seattle Mariners.

On Friday, he pitched the 12th inning in a 7-6 loss. He gave up and hit after the Rangers lost a challenge on a fielding play. Seattle scored the winning run with the single.

On Saturday, he got the win in a 3-2 decision over the Mariners in 10 innings. He came on in the 10th and struck out two to lower his ERA to 3.09 and improve his record to 3-3.

Texas got a run in the bottom of the 10th to win it.

Major League Baseball

  • Connor Norby, Miami Marlins: 0-for-4 in 8-7 win over Diamondbacks.
  • Alec Burleson, St. Louis Cardinals: 1-for-5 with two RBI in 9-6 win over Guardians. He singled in the fifth to drive in both of his runs and cut the deficit to 6-3.
  • Shawn Armstrong, Texas Rangers: See above
  • Gavin Williams, Cleveland Guardians: Did not pitch in 9-6 loss to Cardinals
  • Jeff Hoffman, Toronto Blue Jays: Did not pitch in 15-1 loss to Red Sox.
  • Clayton McCullough, Miami Marlins (manager): Team won again on Saturday, 8-7 over Diamondbacks, and are now 36-45 on the season.

Triple-A

  • Carson Whisenhunt, Sacramento RiverCats (Giants): Did not pitch in 7-4 loss to Oklahoma City. Scheduled to pitch Sunday.
  • Zach Agnos, Albuquerque Isotopes (Rockies): Gave up a run in the eighth in a 8-7 loss to Las Vegas. He also walked one and struck out one as his ERA rose to 2.45.

Double-A

  • Trey Yesavage, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays): Did not pitch in 6-5 loss to Hartford
  • Carter Spivey, Akron Rubber Ducks (Guardians): On 7-day injured list with right shoulder strain (began June 12)
  • Trey Benton, Akron Rubber Ducks (Guardians): On season-ending disabled list

Single-A

  • Carter Cunningham, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays): 1-for-3 in 4-2 win over Tri-City in first game of DH. He did not play in the second game.

  • Josh Moylan, Hudson Valley Renegades (Yankees): Hit a grand slam in the sixth for his team’s only runs in a 7-4 loss to Wilmington. His homer gave Renegades 4-2 lead at the time. Finished 1-for-4 with run and four RBI.
  • Josh Grosz, Hudson Valley Renegades (Yankees): Took the loss in 7-4 Wilmington win. Pitched 7.1 innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts. He’s now 4-6 with a 3.69 ERA.
  • Tyler Bradt, Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals): Pitched final two innings in 4-0 win over Beloit. He struck out three, including once to ECU alum Jacob Jenkins-Cowart, and walked two to lower ERA to 3.24.
  • Jacob-Jenkins-Cowart, Beloit Sky Carp (Marlins): 0-for-4 in 4-0 loss to Peoria
  • Ryan McCrystal, Daytona Tortugas (Reds): 1-for-5 in 10-6 win over Palm Beach
  • Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman, Modesto Nuts (Mariners): Placed on full-season disabled list on April 15.
  • Erik Ritchie, Clearwater Threshers (Phillies): Did not pitch in 5-3 loss to Lakeland
  • Landon Ginn, Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs): Did not pitch in 3-0 loss to Columbia

Frontier League

  • Danny Beal, Down East Bird Dawgs (Independent): Did not pitch in 5-4 loss to Mississippi
