Pirates in baseball: Gavin Williams carries no-hitter into sixth in win over Angels

Gavin Williams closed out the series with the Los Angeles Angels with one of his best outings of the season on Sunday.

The East Carolina alum and Cleveland Guardians pitcher picked up the victory in a 4-2 win. He improved to 5-3 and lowered his ERA to 3.79 with the win. He pitched 6.2 innings, gave up two runs (none earned) on one hit with six strikeouts and two walks.

He didn’t give up a hit until there were two outs in the sixth. He then got the last out to take his efforts into the seventh. He got the first two outs but a fielding error and a hit batter ended his day.

He continued his strong weekend with a big day on Sunday for the Daytona Tortugas.

Playing at first base, he was 2-for-3 with two runs, a RBI and a walk in a 12-7 win over Jupiter. He walked and scored in the second inning, singled in the fourth and reached on an error in the sixth that scored two runs, tying the game at 5-5. He then scored on a single to give Daytona the lead for good at 6-5.

He’s 7-for-13 in his last three games with six runs, six RBI and a walk to raise his batting average to .260.
