Emma Jackson went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and Kendall Frost recorded a complete game in the circle as East Carolina defeated Memphis, 5-1, in the series opener between the two teams on Friday at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.

Kanisha Anderson added two hits and an RBI while Anna Sawyer and Gabby Fowler each plated a run for the Pirates (21-16, 7-6 AAC) who controlled most of the game after scoring four runs in the second inning.

The Pirates got on the board first after Fowler scored Logan Sutton in the bottom of the second and Mary-Kathryn Scott would hit a double to advance Fowler to third with two outs. Anderson and Jackson both hit singles to increase ECU’s lead to 4-0 going into the third inning.

Sawyer’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth extended the Pirates’ lead to 5-0 but the Tigers avoided the shutout with a run scored in the top of the sixth.

Frost retired all three Memphis batters in the top of the seventh to give ECU the series-opening win.

Frost (9-9) tossed five strikeouts and only gave up two hits against 25 batters faced in the circle.
