The East Carolina softball team fell to Florida Atlantic, 7-1, in the series opener with the Owls on Thursday evening at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.
Kanisha Anderson and Logan Sutton each had a hit for the Pirates (25-20, 10-9 AAC) but it was a tough day offensively as those were the only two hits of the game for ECU.
The start of the game was a pitcher’s duel between Kendall Frost and Florida Atlantic’s Autumn Courtney but the Pirates broke through with a Sutton double in the bottom of the second to get into scoring position.
Chloe Geijer advanced Sutton to third with a sac bunt and Mary-Kathryn Scott scored Sutton with a sac bunt of her own to give ECU a 1-0 lead. The Pirates loaded the bases with two outs but the Owls escaped without allowing another run.
FAU’s offense turned the game in the top of the fourth with two home runs as the Owls took a 4-1 lead. The Owls extended their lead to 5-1 in the top of fifth on a sac fly while the Pirates were unable to get on base since the second inning.
Kylie Hammonds two-run blast in the top of the sixth put the finishing touches on the series-opening win for the Owls.
Frost (10-12) took the loss in the circle, giving up nine hits and five runs.
