CHARLOTTE – Emma Jackson hit her fourth home run of the weekend but East Carolina fell short in the series finale to Charlotte, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium.
Jackson continued to stay hot at the plate, hitting a solo home run to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. After holding Charlotte scoreless in the bottom of the first, ECU added another run on a sac fly from Annie Kate Dalton in the top of the second.
Charlotte got on the board in the bottom of the second with a solo home run to cut ECU’s lead to one run but Taylor Apple bounced back to force the next three Niners batters into outs.
The Niners would jump in front in the bottom of the fourth after a two-run double from Savannah Nyguen and add another run on an RBI double to go into the fifth inning ahead 4-2. Charlotte threatened to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth with two runners on but Kendall Frost entered the circle and shut down three straight Charlotte hitters to take the teams to the sixth inning.
East Carolina drew within a run in the top of the sixth but the Pirates stranded three runners and were unable to tie the game or take the lead. Charlotte hit another RBI double to make the score 5-3 but the Pirates prevented the Niners from adding any more runs.
The Pirates had one more chance in the top of the seventh but Charlotte forced all three ECU batters into outs to end the game.
