Could now be the time we see East Carolina University baseball alum Carson Whisenhunt get called up to the majors?
The San Francisco Giants announced Justin Verlander will go on the injured list with nerve irritation in his right pectoral muscle. It’s an issue that first began bothering him in his last start.
NBCSportsBayArea.com reports Verlander may miss at least two starts before returning to the rotation. The website reports that with him out of action, it forces the team to either dip into its bullpen to get a spot start from somebody, skip Verlander’s return in hopes he comes back quick or go a third route.
That last option would be to recall Whisenhunt from Triple-A Sacramento. He’s pitched well for the River Cats, throwing 14 shutout innings over his past two starts. He has pitched at least seven innings in his past four starts with four earned runs, 28 strikeouts and two walks.
The website also reports it has two spots open on its 40-man roster, which means adding the lefthander would be easy. Since the team dealt with injuries to its pitching staff last season, it has a bevy of options to choose from.
