What a difference a year makes.
JH Rose High School grad Cornell Powell was in a different place about a year ago.
He had been cut by the Kansas City Chiefs but signed on with the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad to end the 2024 season. That led to his later release.
Now, he’s playing with the DC Defenders and shining on the field. Going into Week 10, which is the last week of the regular season, he is the league leader in touchdown catches (7) and among the league leaders in yards (418), catches (29) and targets (57). He’s doing all of that with a former Chiefs teammate, Jordan Ta’amu and in just seven starts.
Charles Goldman of AtoZSports.com writes in part, “Powell will have a chance to add to those numbers in Week 10, with a Friday night tilt between the Defenders and the St. Louis Battlehawks. This comes after a two-touchdown performance against the Houston Renegades just last week. The matchup between the Defenders and Battlehawks previews the upcoming XFL Conference Championship Game, which will also be played between the Defenders and Battlehawks.”
