Former East Carolina golfer Jackson Spires held the first-round lead after play on Wednesday at the 65th North Carolina Amateur.

Spires played for ECU from the 2013-14 season to the 2017-18 season before becoming a volunteer assistant coach. On Wednesday, he shot a 65 to lead a field of over 100 golfers playing at The Cardinal by Pete Dye in Greensboro.

Spires, who now lives in Apex, leads by one shot over Cyrus Stewart and Chad Wifong, who each shot -4.

The tournament runs through Saturday.
