It was an emotional night last Saturday at the Whiteville First Pitch Banquet.
ECU baseball coach Cliff Godwin was the keynote speaker. Before he got on stage, his introduction by Whiteville Diamond Club President Chris Brown focused on all the good things Godwin has done for some of Whiteville’s best players to play at ECU.
NRColumbus.com wrote in part, “Turner Brown, Chris Brown’s son, was playing for Godwin at ECU when the Brown family home outside of Whiteville was destroyed by fire. Chris Brown recalled that Godwin didn’t offer to send Turner home, but instead said he would bring him home. He would recall other instances in which tragedy had struck an ECU player’s family and Godwin responded in the same manner. Chris Brown also recalled Godwin opening up his home to Turner after he suffered a shoulder injury that cut his minor league baseball career short.”
