WICHITA, Kan. – Morgan Johnson went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI but East Carolina fell short at Wichita State as the Shockers hit a walk-off RBI single to defeat the Pirates, 9-8, on Saturday evening at Wilkins Stadium.

Annie Kate Dalton added four RBI and a home run and Kanisha Anderson recorded two hits for the Pirates (23-19, 9-8 AAC) who dropped their third straight game. It was a bounce-back game offensively for ECU with 10 hits, including a home run from Johnson and Dalton, after being held in check by the Shockers’ pitching staff in the series opener.

ECU scored first in the top of the third on Dalton’s three-run bomb but Wichita State tacked on six runs in a long bottom of the fourth inning to take the momentum back.

Johnson and the Pirates responded in the top of the fifth as the first baseman hit a three-run homer of her own to tie the game going into the fifth inning. The back-and-forth trend of the game continued in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Shockers scored two runs to go up 8-6.

The Pirates answered yet again, plating two runs to tie the game again and held the Shockers off home plate in the bottom of the sixth. ECU went down one-two-three in the top of the seventh and with two outs, Wichita State hit the walk-off through the left side to clinch the weekend series.

Jordan Hatch (1-1) took the loss in relief of Taylor Apple, giving up four hits and two runs in 2.1 innings.
