Florida Atlantic scored four runs in the top of the first and did not relent, clinching an American Athletic Conference series with a 14-1 seven-inning run-rule win over East Carolina Saturday evening inside Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

The Owls (22-9, 4-4 AAC) outhit the Pirates (20-12, 6-2 AAC) by an 18-3 margin and clubbed three more home runs as Jake Duer finished the game 4-for-5 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI. Dylan LaPointe added three hits of his own while John Schroeder and Jake Millan accounted for three RBI apiece. Braxton Tramel paced ECU with two hits, a run scored and an RBI.

Tyler Murphy (3-2) tossed a complete game, surrendering just one run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Nick Moran (1-1) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits with a strikeout in 1.1 innings of work.

Marshall Lipsey laid down a bunt single on the first pitch of the contest then stole second before Patrick Ward tripled off the wall in left center to give FAU an early 1-0 advantage. Duer followed with an RBI double, and LaPointe took an 0-1 pitch over the wall for a two-run shot that made it 4-0.

Tramel drew the Pirates within three with a solo homer in the bottom of the second, but the Owls scored eight runs over the third and fifth innings to pull away. Single tallies in the sixth and seventh frames provided the game’s final score.
