by | Jun 9, 2025

J.H. Rose High School football alum Cornell Powell is heading to the UFL championship.

Powell helped the DC Defenders to a 36-18 win on Sunday over the host St. Louis Battlehawks in the XFL Conference Championship. The Defenders (7-4) will face the Michigan Panthers on Saturday at The Doe at America’s Center in St. Louis, the same spot where Powell and the Defenders won on Sunday.

Michigan (7-4) beat the Birmingham Stallions, 44-29 in the USFL title game. The Stallions, led by former East Carolina coach Skip Holtz, were the defending UFL champs.

Powell finished with four catches for 57 yards. Although he didn’t get a touchdown, he did haul in a two-point conversion that gave DC a 14-0 lead.
