Kenan Bowman and Austin Irby both registered base knocks for ECU (2-2) who took advantage of three Campbell (1-2) errors, but the home side ended up outhitting the Pirates 6-2 as six different Camels accounted for one apiece.

Jett Music (1-0) was credited with the win after tossing 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings with six strikeouts against no walks. Brad Pruett (0-1) took the loss, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts in two frames.

Campbell threatened with one out in the home half of the first inning as a fielding error and walk put two runners on, but Kenan Bowman corralled a pair of fly balls at the warning track in left to keep the Camels off the scoreboard. ECU had an opportunity to crack the board in the top of the second itself as Jack Herring and Alex Peltier drew free passes of their own before moving into scoring position with two outs, but Charlie Meglio handled a grounder to third and threw across the diamond in time to terminate the frame.

The home side kept the pressure on in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with no outs via three consecutive singles, but reliever Ethan Young took the mound and limited the damage in a big way. A sac fly off the bat of Darnell Parker afforded Campbell the lead, but Young responded with another fly ball out and a strikeout to escape the inning.

A trio of costly Camel errors in the top of the fourth resulted in two runs and the Pirates’ first lead of the contest, but East Carolina was unable to muster much more offense from there. Campbell would snatch the upper hand back in the bottom of the seventh thanks to an Andrew Schuldt RBI double and a run-scoring groundout before the Pirates went down in order in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Postgame Notes Graphic

  • East Carolina dropped its fifth consecutive one-run decision to Campbell dating back to 2023.
  • The respective pitching staffs combined for 25 strikeouts against just three walks each.
  • The Pirates and Camels were 1-for-17 with two outs on the board while neither side recorded a two-out RBI.
  • Only five total hitters for either club reached base to lead off an inning.
  • Pruett has struck out 14 batters in 5.1 frames this season and is holding opposing hitters to a .211 batting average.

Up Next: East Carolina is slated to host No. 6 North Carolina Friday at 5 p.m. inside Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium in the opener of a three-game traveling series.
