Analysis: How Mike Wright fits into ECU football program

by | May 23, 2025

As much excitement as there has been about the upcoming East Carolina football season, one topic has topped them all in anticipation and buzz.

Mike Wright joined the program at quarterback after stints at Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and Northeastern. He brings speed, talent and another option for the offense.

Wright’s arrival doesn’t mean he’ll be the starting quarterback for the Pirates. In fact, with the success Katin Houser had after taking over for Jake Garcia last season, it would be hard to think Houser would lose his job.

Houser even displayed his skills running the ball in the Military Bowl win over NC State. He had a career-high 84 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the win over the Wolfpack. Since that’s one of Wright’s specialities, running the ball, it might give ECU even more options on offense.

Steve Helwick of UnderdogDynasty.com writes in part, “And he did that all with a fracture in his throwing wrist. Houser underwent offseason surgery on the wrist, which limited him in the spring. But as he returns to full health, it’s hard to see ECU send out another quarterback in the season opener rematch against NC State on Aug. 28. So what does the veteran Wright bring to this offense?”
