The AAC is bringing in a heavyweight to lend some additional credibility to its basketball programs.
Mike Tranghese, the former commissioner of the Big East Conference, will advise the league on its approach in both men’s and women’s basketball. The news was released on Tuesday by the conference.
“I’ve known Mike my entire career, and there’s no one more qualified to help the American take a bold, comprehensive look at basketball,” AAC commissioner Tim Pernetti said in a statement provided to the Denton Record-Chronicle on Tuesday. “His experience and insight will be invaluable as we build a stronger foundation for the future of our men’s and women’s programs.”
Tranghese will advise the league about ways to improve scheduling and TV exposure and represent the conference in ways to help improve its position nationally. The AAC has received multiple bids into both the men’s and women’s tournaments since its inception in 2013.
“Mike understands better than anyone how performance, scheduling, collaboration and perception all contribute to both institutional and conference-wide success in college basketball,” Pernetti said.
Tranghese has served in similar roles in the past, including the SEC. The conference has become a college basketball power over the past decade.
