Tulane scored five unanswered runs in the middle to late innings Sunday to defeat East Carolina, 5-3, and claim the rubber game of the teams’ American Athletic Conference series inside Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

The Green Wave (26-18, 10-8 AAC) held a slight 9-8 advantage in the hit column, but the Pirates (25-19, 10-8 AAC) were just 1 of 12 with runners in scoring position and left nine on base.

Carter Benbrook (2-0) earned the win on the mound, pitching 2.2 scoreless relief innings with a walk and a strikeout. Sean Jenkins (3-4) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits with two strikeouts in four frames.

Dixon Williams wrapped up a solid series showing with a three-hit performance that included a double and triple as well as a walk. Austin Irby also rapped out a pair of hits while Connor Rasmussen logged two hits, two runs scored and three RBI for the visitors.

Tulane used a pair of leadoff doubles to grab a 2-0 lead moving to the home half of the second inning before Jack Herring drilled a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to slice the ECU deficit to one. The Pirates got two more on base after that, but a pop up on the infield and looking strikeout terminated the threat.

The Green Wave would hit two-run home runs in the sixth and eighth innings to pull away before a Braden Burress RBI groundout accounted for the final run of the day.
