Trey Yesavage says family has been subjected to abuse, threats

ECU baseball alum Trey Yesavage revealed some startling news before Sunday’s Game 1 of the ALCS between the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners.

Yesavage, who will start Game 2 of the series on Monday, said his family has been subjected to abuse and threats due to his postseason debut last Sunday against the New York Yankees.

In just his fourth start in the big leagues for Toronto, Yesavage set a Blue Jays postseason record with 11 strikeouts in 5.1 innings against the Yankees. The team won the game to take a 2-0 lead in the ALDS, which Toronto eventually won, 3-1.

“Living in this world where there’s so many different opinions and feelings which results in a lot of hate, it’s sad to see that people close to me are being attacked for my performances on the field,” Yesavage said Sunday before the AL Championship Series opener against Seattle, according to The Associated Press.

“These people have done nothing to warrant negativity for my actions, whether that’s my parents, my brothers, my girlfriend, family,” he added. “It’s just really sad. I know I have the platform to address it, so I am. I hope that people can realize that those individuals have nothing to do with what happens on the field. If you have a problem, I’m a man. I can take whatever opinions anybody has about me or my life. So I just wanted to get that out there.”

The AP reported Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Yesavage didn’t speak with him before he made the comments.

“It’s unfortunate that that’s a reality,” Schneider said of the abuse. “I commend him for saying what he said and for backing up the people that love and support him.

“I give him a ton of credit for a guy that is 22 and just arrived in the big leagues and understands he has a really, really good support system around him and has a platform to talk about it,” Schneider also said, according to MLB.com’s KeeganMatheson. “It adds to him and his maturity level, I think.”

The AP also reports Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler, also a rookie, was the subject of online abuse before he beat the Boston Red Sox in the deciding game of the Wild Card Series. Schlittler is from Walpole, Mass., and grew up a Red Sox fan.

Yesavage went 1-0 with a 3.21 ERA in three September starts. Including his postseason start, he has 27 strikeouts in 19.1 innings.
