COLUMBIA, S.C. – Anna Sawyer went 3-for-5 at the plate including an RBI double as East Carolina defeated Saint Francis, 8-2, in the Gamecock Invitational at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field on Saturday afternoon.

Kylee Schojan and Emma Jackson each added two hits for the Pirates (2-1) who racked up 11 hits as a team on the day.

After taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Schojan RBI single, ECU added another run in the top of the third as Schojan’s double scored Logan Sutton to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead.

Saint Francis drew a walk and hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third to tie the game but ECU answered on its next at-bat when Kanisha Anderson’s triple put the Pirates immediately in scoring position.

After Annie Kate Dalton drew a walk, Sawyer and Sutton recorded a double and single respectively to put ECU back ahead 4-2.

Taylor Apple entered the circle for Jordan Hatch in the bottom of the fourth, striking out three straight batters and the Pirates would add two more runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 6-2. Errors from the Red Flash allowed the Pirates two insurance runs in the top of the sixth as ECU picked up its second straight win.

Apple (2-0) picked up the win in relief with three strikeouts against seven batters faced. Olivia Kolowitz (0-1) took the loss, giving up 10 hits and six earned runs.
