Pirates in baseball: Quiet Thursday for ECU alumni, Carson Whisenhunt pitches Friday

by | May 30, 2025

Thursday was a transition day for Major League Baseball and a quiet one, mostly in the minors for ECU alumni.

There were only five games on the schedule in the majors. The Blue Jays beat the A’s, 12-0, which meant closer Jeff Hoffman didn’t pitch. The rest of the former Pirates — Connor Norby, Alec Burleson, Shawn Armstrong, Gavin Williams, Zach Agnos and manager Clayton McCullough — were off as their teams traveled back home or to their next road series.

In the minors, Carter Spivey got his second straight start but did not far well in getting a loss. Carson Whisenhunt gets a start tonight for the Sacramento River Cats. The San Francisco Giants decided not to promote him to the majors after pitcher Justin Verlander went on the disabled list.

Whisenhunt is 5-3 with a 3.34 ERA and 54 strikeouts this season.

See below to find out what the rest of the Pirates in baseball did on Thursday.
