Pirates in baseball: Josh Grosz picks up decision in Hudson Valley win

East Carolina baseball alum Josh Grosz picked up the win for Hudson Valley in an 11-2 win over Aberdeen on Thursday.

Grosz (4-3) pitched five innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks. He lowered his ERA to 3.83.

Outside of a balk, he settled down after giving up two runs in the first inning. Aberdeen didn’t get another hit after Grosz left the game. He struck out two in the second inning, got three straight outs after giving up a triple in the third and struck out two in the fourth.

Teammate and fellow ECU alum Josh Moylan did not play.

Shawn Armstrong

He earned his fourth hold of the season but the Rangers could not hold the lead, falling 4-3 to the Rays.

Armstrong got the last out in the seventh inning on a strikeout. However, Tampa scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win it.

Armstrong dropped his ERA to 3.60 with the outing.

Triple-A

  • Carson Whisenhunt, Sacramento RiverCats (Giants): Did not get the decision in 8-3 win over Sugarland. Pitched 5.2 innings, gave up three runs on eight hits, one a homer, with one strikeout and a walk. The homer gave Sugarland a 3-2 lead. Sacramento scored fourth in the seventh and two in the ninth to win it.

Double-A

  • Carter Spivey, Akron Rubber Ducks (Guardians): Did not pitch in 4-1 win over Chesapeake
  • Trey Benton, Akron Rubber Ducks (Guardians): On season-ending disabled list

Single-A

  • Trey Yesavage, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays): Did not pitch in 9-4 win over Tri-City.
  • Carter Cunningham, Vancouver Canadians (Blue Jays): Was 1-for-4 with a run and two RBI in 9-4 win over Tri-City. Drove in a run on a forceout and singled and scored in the eighth.
  • Josh Moylan, Hudson Valley Renegades (Yankees): See above

  • Tyler Bradt, Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals): Pitched three innings in 9-2 win over Quad City in eight innings. Struck out three and walked one with no hits allowed to drop ERA to 3.16.
  • Jacob-Jenkins-Cowart, Beloit Sky Carp (Marlins): 0-for-1 with a run scored and two walks in 5-4 win over Fort Worth.
  • Ryan McCrystal, Daytona Tortugas (Reds): Did not play in 11-3 win over Lakeland
  • Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman, Modesto Nuts (Mariners): Placed on full-season disabled list on April 15.
  • Erik Ritchie, Florida Coast League Phillies (Phillies): Did not pitch in 6-4 loss to FCL Tigers
  • Landon Ginn, Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs): Pitched last two innings in 12-1 loss to Kannapolis. Gave up five earned runs on six hits with two walks and a strikeout. ERA is now 12.79.
