East Carolina baseball alum Connor Norby had a big night at the plate to help the Miami Marlins end an eight-game winning streak by the Los Angeles Angels in a 6-2 victory on Saturday.
Norby had three hits, including a three-run homer in the seventh inning. He connected on a 1-2 pitch for the homer as the Marlins and manager Clayton McCullough — also an ECU alum — ended a three-game losing streak. The Marlins are now 20-30 on the season.
Carson Whisenhunt
Whisenhunt picked up his fifth win of the season as the Sacramento River Cats picked up an 11-4 win over Oklahoma City.
It looks like he might not get called up to the San Francisco Giants after Justin Verlander went on the disabled list. So he pitched in his normal outing and got the win despite not being at his best.
Whisenhunt pitched 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a season-high five walks. He gave up a three-run homer in the fourth that cut Sacramento’s lead to 4-3 at the time.
Coming into Saturday, he had 14 shutout innings over his past two starts. He pitched at least seven innings in his past four starts with four earned runs, 28 strikeouts and two walks.
Alec Burleson
He helped the Cardinals rally for a 6-5 win over the Diamondbacks.
Burleson finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. He singled and scored in the seventh and had his sixth double of the season in the eighth. He later scored to give the Cardinals the final tally.
