Pirates in baseball: Big nights for Connor Norby, Trey Yesavage, Carson Whisenhunt, Shawn Armstrong

by | May 14, 2025

After a quiet Monday for East Carolina baseball alumni in the pros and minors, it was very busy on Tuesday.

East Carolina baseball alum Connor Norby had a home run to remember. Unfortunately for his Miami Marlins, they had a ninth inning to forget.

Norby hit his second home run of the season, a solo blast that gave the Marlins the lead. However, Miami’s bullpen gave up three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to drop a 5-4 decision on Tuesday.

Norby was 2-for-4 with two runs and the RBI. He reached on a throwing error in the second inning and hit his first triple of the season and scored in the fifth.

He was the first batter of the seventh and connected on a towering blast deep into the bleachers to give the Marlins a 3-2 lead. Miami added another run later in the inning before the Cubs rallied to win it.

The Marlins dropped to 15-26 under manager Clayton McCullough, also an ECU alumni.

Trey Yesavage

Despite giving up two solo homers, it was another pitching clinic for ECU alum and Dunedin Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage.

He struck out 12, a season high, over five innings. It’s his fifth straight game with seven or more Ks.

He improved to 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA as the Jays won 11-3. Dunedin is 7-0 in the games Yesavage has pitched this season.

Shawn Armstrong and Zach Agnos

Two ECU alumni were in the same game as Shawn Armstrong and the Rangers squared off with Zach Agnos and the Rockies.

The Rangers won, 4-1, as Armstrong got his first save of the season. He came on in the ninth inning and struck out all three batters. It’s the first time he’s done that all season as he dropped his ERA to 3.06.

Agnos didn’t have quite the night. He gave up a run on a homer, one of two hits, with a walk and a strikeout in .2 innings in the eighth inning. His ERA is now 1.64

Carson Whisenhunt

He had one of his best pitching performances of the season in a 5-3 win over Salt Lake.

Whisenhunt started and pitched seven innings, giving up no runs on three hits with nine strikeouts and no walks. He dropped his ERA to 3.48 and improved to 3-3 on the season.

He worked his way through the game with at least one strikeout in the second, third and fourth innings. He struck out the side in the fifth and another in the seventh before being lifted.
