The East Carolina women’s basketball team was defeated by UTSA in their home finale on Tuesday evening in Minges Coliseum, 67-48.

The game featured as poor a start as imaginable for the Pirates (16-14, 8-10 AAC) who shot a mere 3-29 from the field in the first half, being held to just six points in the first quarter on a pair of three-point shots and five points in the second.

Conversely, Jordyn Jenkins looked every bit of a conference player of the year for the Roadrunners (25-3, 17-1 AAC), making her first nine attempts from the field before finally missing for the first time on a three-point heave at the first-half buzzer. Jenkins had 19 points at the break and at one point had accumulated eight made field goals to six total points to the Pirates.

Normally dominant on the glass, the Pirates were themselves dominated on the game by a 45-28 margin. This included a 15-4 margin in the first quarter, including 8-1 on the offensive boards, as UTSA made the second half almost entirely academic.

Where a viewer might ordinarily anticipate a run by the Pirates to lower the margin in any measurable way in the second half, it never came. The hosts made six of eight field goals during a stretch of play in the third, but during that same time UTSA made all five of their attempts from the field.

There were no answers for a Roadrunners’ squad which has been the class of the conference all season long and last lost a solitary contest on Jan. 29 on the road against a cagey South Florida side.

The Roadrunners went to the bench midway through the fourth quarter, Jenkins finishing her day with 26 points and six rebounds on a remarkably efficient 11-14 from the field. Idara Udo added 13 and 11 rebounds for UTSA while Nina De Leon Negron posted a dozen points.

For the Pirates, only Jayla Hearp mustered double-figures scoring with 10 points.
