SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The East Carolina women’s basketball team won their final game of the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout, 72-53, over the Hofstra Pride on Friday afternoon in the Coliseo Guillermo Angulo. The Pirates led wire-to-wire in the win to go 2-1 in the Discover Puerto Rico Shootout.

The Pirates (4-4) got out to an excellent start with a 9-0 burst from the opening tip with five points from Kennedy Fauntleroy and four from Savannah Brooks to force a Hofstra (1-5) timeout. After the Pride was able to briefly trim the margin to three, Taylor Barner answered with a timely triple which she followed up with a second in a row before Zaniah Zellous scored to a pair of buckets to push the ECU run to 10-0 to end the first quarter. The Pirates led 25-12 after the opening frame.

Three Pirates made three-point shots in the first quarter, giving the team its 15th consecutive game with multiple threes made.

Fauntleroy kept her strong play going with five points in the second quarter to enter halftime with a game-high 11 points. In a lower scoring second, the Pirates still got the best of the Tribe by a point as the teams combined for 13 total turnovers in the period.

The Pirates got the offense going in the second half and did it in part with their defense, forcing two of their three 10-second violations in the third quarter. The team forced a total of seven turnovers in that third quarter while giving the ball away just twice. ECU forced a total of 22 turnovers in the game, their seventh time in eight games this season forcing 20-or-more.

By the 5:45 mark of the third quarter, ECU had already equaled its second quarter scoring output. Despite that quick start, the Pirates suffered a drought of nearly four minutes to end the quarter without a field goal while Hofstra made six of nine to end the quarter. ECU did hold its largest lead of the game at the point of that final bucket in the third, going up by as many as 22 points on a Bobbi Smith jumper.

Hofstra got as close as 11 points back on a score to open the fourth quarter, but ECU responded with another run (8-0) to push the margin back up into a comfortable range while holding the Pride scoreless for 5:24, over half of the quarter. Hofstra shot just 3-16 from the field in the fourth quarter, letting the Pirates go back in front by as many as 21.

Four ECU players finished the game in double figures scoring with Barner leading the way at 18 points. Hofstra had just one double-figures scorer (Alarice Gooden, 10).
