ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted the news to his X account on Wednesday. Williams quickly became a candidate for the position and interviewed for the job. CBSSports.com reporter Matt Zenitz posted on X on Tuesday that new Patriots coach Mike Vrabel has interest in Williams.
Williams and Vrabel worked together when both were with the Tennessee Titans. Vrabel was the head coach there while Williams was the defensive line coach and assistant head coach. Williams was with the Titans from 2018-23 then left for Detroit.
Williams has also coached on the defensive line for Oakland and Miami. He’s also worked at several colleges.
According to TV station WOOD-TV, “Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes already have their work cut out for them. They need to replace offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who was hired as head coach by the Bears earlier this week. They will likely need to replace defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who has also been tied to several head coaching vacancies this cycle.”
