No. 24 Coastal Carolina raced out to an early five-run advantage Saturday on the way to a 9-1 win over East Carolina in the middle contest of the teams’ three-game set inside Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

The Pirates (7-7) and Chanticleers (11-4) play the series rubber game Sunday at 1 p.m.

Cameron Flukey (1-0) put together seven scoreless frames to earn the win, scattering four hits and striking out five against one walk. Sean Jenkins (1-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with two walks in 2.0 innings of work.

The top of the Coastal Carolina lineup did the heavy lifting as Dean Mihos, Caden Bodine and Blake Barthol combined to go 7-for-15 with three runs scored and five RBI. Colby Wallace paced the ECU lineup with a pair of hits and a run scored.

Both teams created some traffic on the base paths in the first inning, but the Chanticleers broke through in the second frame with a five spot, hitting a pair of two-run home runs sandwiched around a Bodine RBI double.

Coastal Carolina added single tallies in the top of the fourth and sixth innings before the Pirates plated one in the bottom of the eighth on a wild pitch. The Chanticleers capped the evening with two runs in the top of the ninth.

Postgame Notes Graphic

  • Dixon Williams extended his on base streak to 10 games by reaching on an error in the first inning.
  • Coastal Carolina was 6-for-15 with two outs and produced six two-out RBI.
  • The teams combined to leave 18 runners on base (12 by the Chanticleers).
  • Wallace continued his fine work in the series and is 4-for-6 with three runs scored and six RBI in the two contests.
