The Cleveland Guardians will have ECU baseball alum Gavin Williams on the mound Wednesday to face the Miami Marlins. It’s his first game since a near no-hitter last Wednesday against the New York Mets.
The Marlins, coached by fellow ECU alum Clayton McCullough have been playing well lately but have stumbled a bit against the Houston Astros and the Guardians, losing 4-3 five games below .500 for the first time since July 28.
On the other hand, Williams is riding high after he nearly no-hit the New York Mets last Wednesday. He gave up a solo homer to Juan Soto with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to break up the no-hitter.
Williams pitched 8.1 innings, walked four and struck out six to earn the win, improving to 7-4 with a 3.14 ERA.
