ECU’s Synia Johnson named American’s Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year

IRVING, Texas – East Carolina’s Synia Johnson has been named the American Conference’s Women’s Basketball Scholar Athlete of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.

Johnson, a graduate student by way of Waldorf, Md., has long excelled both in the classroom and on the hardwood. A three-time Team Captain, she has accumulated a 3.85 GPA while in pursuit of her Master of Business Administration degree. This, after an impressive 3.91 GPA for her undergraduate education. The award comes on the heels of Johnson being selected to participate in the NCAA’s Above the Rim Summit at the Final Four in April.

Johnson is the first ECU women’s basketball player to win this illustrious award in this the 12th edition of the league’s annual honors. The American gives Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards to one athlete in each sport, men’s and women’s, as well as a male and female overall Scholar Athlete of the Year.

2024-25 was the fifth and concluding season of Johnson’s fabled career at ECU. Long will she be remembered as the 2023 American Tournament Most Outstanding Player, she also made 66 starts in 112 appearances, scoring more than 600 points, grabbing over 300 rebounds and contributed nearly 200 assists and steals apiece.

That same 2022-23 season saw Johnson named ECU’s Female Outstanding Scholar-Athlete at the Breakfast of Champions. And now, she’s earned one final high honor from the conference for which she has graced the court and served as an exemplary role model in the community since the fall of 2020.
