The East Carolina women’s basketball team defeated Charlotte, 63-45, on Saturday afternoon in Minges Coliseum. Amiya Joyner posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds to go with a team-high three assists.

The Pirates (14-12, 6-8 AAC) got out to a solid start in the game as Devin Hagemann started the contest with fire coming off of her fingertips, scoring 11 points in the first four minutes on a perfect 4-4 from the field, including three makes from behind the arc. From that opening run, the Pirates were in control of a game which saw only one lead change and 37 minutes and 51 seconds of ECU out front as Charlotte (8-16, 3-10) struggled to keep pace scoring. The 49ers did get 15 first half points from Keanna Rembert who proved an early problem, but the forward finished with only 17 as the Pirates made a definitive adjustment after halftime.

It was also after halftime when the game became a route. A 7-0 run for the Pirates forced an early Charlotte timeout with the lead leaked into double digits for the first time, but those 49ers had no answers with six different ECU players scoring in the third quarter. Conversely, the visitors managed only six total points in that period. In a flash the margin was in the mid teens and by the time Joyner knocked in a pair of free throws to push the lead over 20 midway through the fourth quarter, the result was already well in hand.

For Joyner, it was her 10th double-double and the 36th of her illustrious career. But on the whole, it was a team effort for the Pirates as five players scored eight-or-more points and six made multiple field goals in the game. The team assisted on 15 of their 23 made shots and forced 21 turnovers on the 49ers. And, despite finishing the day with 19 total turnovers, the Pirates had only six giveaways in the second half as they blew the game open.
