BYU’s football team may be watching ECU play Coastal Carolina on Saturday night. They won’t be playing a game.
The Cougars are off for Week 3 of the college football season and will instead be gearing up for the game at ECU on Sept. 20. The Pirates will have a short turnaround, while BYU will have 11 days before playing another game.
“We will learn from our mistakes — the little stuff that we need to clean up. If we clean up that little stuff we are beating Stanford by a lot more than we did today, scoring (more points) in the red zone,” BYU receiver Chase Roberts said after last Saturday’s 27-3 win over new ACC team Stanford. “So I think that’s really it, getting on cue as an offense and putting up more points.”
BYU’s offense has outscored its first two opponents 96-3. Deseret.com notes that performance comes against two sub-par teams. In fact, BYU players say the defense has been playing so well, it likely needs the break more than the offense.
“I think healing up, resting up, as well as getting those reps with Bear (will be the focus),” Roberts said after catching five passes for 84 yards against the Cardinal. “Being able to get the pass game going, and then getting on the same page and learning and growing, getting that confidence in each other as an offense, as receivers, and just keep rolling (is the plan). I think it has been a perfect first couple of games for us, and we will start rolling.”
BYU’s defense has allowed just 14 rushing yards total in its two wins. The Cougars ate tops in the country in that category and is also tops in scoring defense. BYU is also No. 2 in total defense and No. 3 in third-down conversions, according to Deseret.com.
