The Toronto Blue Jays sit atop the American League East standings as teams prepare to enter the second half of the season.
The Blue Jays (55-41) are two games ahead of the New York Yankees (53-43) and three ahead of the Boston Red Sox (53-45). The race for the playoffs will continue to be a tight one, especially since the Blue Jays didn’t factor in being here at this point in the season.
MLB.com Blue Jays reporter Keegan Matheson wrote about the things the team needs to do to stay in contention. That includes big play from Vladimir Guerrero Jr., good trade strategy along with other factors.
Matheson also mentioned ECU alum and No. 2 prospect Trey Yesavage. He said the farm system “has had a great year, but at this point, it’s all about who could help the big club down the stretch.” Yesavage could factor in being one of the 13 best pitchers for the stretch run, depending on how he continues to progress.
This season, Yesavage, 21, is 5-1 with a 3.19 ERA in 16 minor league starts over 67.2 innings. He has given up 37 hits, walked 30 and struck out 111. Batters are hitting .157 against him.
However, he has seen his struggles with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in Double-A. He’s 1-1 with a 6.35 ERA in five starts over 17 innings. He’s giving up 12 runs, walked 11 snd struck out 23.
