After a nearly 60-year period of serving East Carolina Athletics as one of the institution’s most vital facilities, W. M. Scales Field House is set for demolition beginning next week.

Over the last several months, ECU has worked to find new workspaces and transition the remaining employees out of the Field House. This process was recently completed, allowing for the demolition to move forward.

The decision to remove the structure was made thoughtfully over a period through the thoughtful consideration of the East Carolina Athletics Department in concert with university administration. Due to the prohibitive cost of renovating a building opened in 1968, the decision was made that the best course of action would be to remove the building entirely.

In the immediate aftermath of the building’s removal, the plan is for the construction of a green space in the footprint of the current building. Plans are being finalized to recognize the Scales family appropriately on the site.
