Former JH Rose star Cornell Powell getting new life in UFL

by | May 28, 2025

Cornell Powell’s quest to return to the NFL has led to a successful season in the UFL.

The DC Defenders’ wide receiver is currently second in the UFL in touchdown catches (five) and among the league leaders overall with 29 catches for 418 yards, the fourth best in the league. He has caught two touchdown passes in each of his past two games heading into the regular-season finale.

Yardbarker.com’s Matt Connor, who writes for the company’s Kansas City Chiefs website, wrote about Powell’s recent success. Powell was drafted by the Chiefs in 2021 and bounced between the active roster and practice squad through 2024. He was cut last November and signed with the Seattle Seahawks but was later cut from there, too.

Connor wrote that his success in the UFL could open a door again to the NFL. “Powell’s UFL success is not only a positive turn for a player written off by most, but it should gain some notice as well. Plenty of spring standouts have turned their momentum in developmental leagues into NFL invites. Perhaps Powell will look like an intriguing option for teams looking to add some WR competition before training camp.”
