Pirates in baseball: Carson Whisenhunt dazzles again, gets Sunday victory

by | May 19, 2025

East Carolina baseball alum Carson Whisenhunt made another case for a promotion to the majors with his latest performance on Sunday.

He pitched seven innings, giving up a run (unearned) on two hits, a walk and five strikeouts in a 7-1 win over Salt Lake. He improved to 4-3 with the win.

Whisenhunt struck out two in the first inning to get things going. He gave up a single in the third and another in the fourth. Salt Lake scored in the third on an error.

Sunday’s outing makes him 2-1 in May with a 1.29 ERA in four starts over 28 innings. He’s given up 18 hits, four earned runs, walked two and struck out 28. He has pitched seven innings in four straight outings this month. The first River Cat since Andrew Suarez to have done the feat, according to Giant Prospective.

Alec Burleson

Alec Burleson was the lone bright spot for the St. Louis Cardinals in a 2-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals.

Burleson hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his fourth of the season, to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead before the Royals rallied. Despite the loss, St. Louis went 7-2 on its road trip.

“I put a good swing on the slider,” Burleson said. “Didn’t think it was going off the bat, but I spun it well and the wind kind of helped it.”
