Pirates in baseball: Zach Agnos picks up first save; Hoffman strikes out career No. 500th batter

by | May 1, 2025

East Carolina baseball alum Zach Agnos picked up his first big-league save on Wednesday as the Rockies beat the Braves, 2-1.

He came on in the ninth inning and got Marcell Ozuna to ground out before Matt Olson flew out. Ozzie Albies singled before Eli White flew out to right to end it.

“Basically we’re just ready whenever they call our name,” Agnos said about his appearance. “Whether it’s the first inning, or whether it’s the ninth. It’s the same game, and you try to not make the game bigger than it is.”

Jeff Hoffman

The ECU alum and Blue Jays closer pitched two innings, improving to 3-0 as the Blue Jays scored in the bottom of the 10th inning for a 7-6 victory over the Red Sox.

In addition to getting the win, he also recorded his 500th career strikeout in the outing. He finished with three strikeouts, fanning one in the ninth and two in the 10th.
