ELON, N.C. – Bradley Zayac and Jackson DiLorenzo backstopped East Carolina to a 4-2 victory over Elon with a pair of career-best pitching performances Tuesday night at Latham Park.

The Pirates (26-19) out-hit the Phoenix (19-25) by an 8-4 margin while the aforementioned duo both struck out a personal-high five batters to help ECU complete the season series sweep of Elon for the second consecutive year.

Though not credited with the win, Zayac turned in a season-long 4.1 inning outing and allowed just one earned run while scattering four hits. DiLorenzo then retired each of the eight batters he faced in 2.2 frames of relief. Brad Pruett rounded out the evening with two perfect innings to log his third save of the campaign. Itai Spinoza (0-3) was charged with the loss after surrendering one run and walking a batter in one frame of work.

Dixon Williams and Austin Irby turned in two-hit efforts for the Pirates while Vince Fattore registered a hit and the home side’s only RBI of the contest.

East Carolina menaced right away in the top of the first as Braden Burress drew a leadoff walk and Jack Herring whistled a single through the left side, but a lineout to first and a double play allowed Elon to escape unscathed. The Pirates did break through in the second though. Irby began things with another leadoff walk, moved to second on a Walker Barron sacrifice bunt and reached third via an Alex Peltier infield single before crossing home on a textbook squeeze bunt by Alex Bouche. Burress then doubled to right field with two outs to score Peltier and make it 2-0.

The Phoenix responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the second, but ECU put up zero after zero on the mound the rest of the way. John Collins put the Pirates back on top in the fifth with an RBI single that scored Colby Wallace who had walked to begin the frame. Then, Williams singled with one out in the top of the seventh before racing home from first on an Irby single that rolled a portion of the way into the gap in left center.

Elon never threatened past the fifth inning, failing to have a runner reach base in the final four frames.
