Gabby Fowler led the Pirates (26-25, 11-13 AAC) with two hits and two RBI including a two-run home run in the top of the second. Morgan Johnson, Annie Kate Dalton, Anna Sawyer and Chloe Geijer each added a hit for ECU.
The Pirates got two runners on in the top of the first via a Johnson single and Sutton reaching out an error but ECU could not get a run across with two outs.
UAB drew three consecutive walks with just one out to load the bases and the Blazers plated the game’s first run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first.
ECU quickly answered in the top of the second on Fowler’s two-run blast over the wall in right center to put the Pirates back in front, 2-1.
The Blazers hit a solo homer in the bottom of the third to tie the game but Kendall Frost entered the circle and forced two straight outs to send the game to the fourth inning.
UAB retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single but Annie Kate Dalton threw out a Blazers’ runner attempting to steal second to minimize any further damage. The Blazers extended their lead to 5-2 after back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fifth.
ECU put runners at first and third in the top of the sixth with two outs but a pop up to first base stopped the Pirates from cutting into UAB’s lead. Dalton hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh to give the Pirates some life but UAB forced the Pirates into their final out of the game.
Frost (11-15) picked up the loss in the circle for ECU.
