CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The East Carolina softball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped as the Pirates fell 7-6 to North Carolina in nine innings at Anderson Softball Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Emma Jackson and Trinity Nichols each had two hits to lead the Pirates (23-17, 9-6 AAC) while Anna Sawyer recorded a double but the Pirates were unable to maintain a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning, allowing the Tar Heels to slowly creep back into the game.
After the Pirates scored four runs in the top of the fifth, North Carolina cut the Pirates’ lead to just two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Tar Heels scored a run due to a Pirate error in the bottom of the seventh and a wild pitch allowed UNC to tie the game and send the contest to extra innings.
Hailey Massaro and Nichols both drove in runs in the top of the eighth to put the Pirates back in front 6-4 but Carolina responded with a two RBI double to send the game to the ninth inning.
After ECU went down one-two-three, the Tar Heels got into scoring position and brought the game-winning run across home on an RBI single.
Kendall Frost (9-10) took the loss in the circle, giving up 15 hits and four runs in 5.1 innings.
