Spring Training: Yesavage’s ‘heart was beating like crazy’; Whisenhunt starts, Burly shines

by | Mar 16, 2025

It was an eventful Saturday in Spring Training with ECU alum Trey Yesavage, Carson Whisenhunt and Alec Burleson each stealing the spotlight.

Yesavage shines for Blue Jays

Trey Yesavage certainly left them wanting to see more against the Minnesota Twins.

He gave up two hits and struck out three over two innings in the Blue Jays’ 10-0 win. Yesavage also got the win.

“My heart was beating like crazy,” Yesavage said afterward.

He struggled to find the strike zone in the first inning but calmed down and pitched solid in the second. He said he didn’t tell anyone about how nervous he was.

“I just knew what I needed to do,” said Yesavage.

Yesavage said he’s learned a lot in Spring Training and is ready to show his worth. He even got to see fellow ECU alum Jeff Hoffman.

“It’s definitely been long, slow, methodical,” said Yesavage. “Every detail has been accounted for, but it’s finally amazing to be out there pitching in a Blue Jays uniform.

“He’s (Hoffman) a great guy. Said he enjoyed watching me last year and [he’s] someone I can definitely look up to.”

Whisenhunt starts in tie with Rangers

Carson Whisenhunt looked sharp in pitching the first three innings of the San Francisco Giants’ 5-5 tie with the Texas Rangers.

He went the first three innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. He got out of a couple of jams with solid pitches to avoid any further damage.

Burlington homers, drives in three

Alec Burleson hit his second home run of Spring Training in the 9-5 win by the St. Louis Cardinals over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Burleson hit a solo homer to start the fourth inning. He finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBI. He drove in two runs with a line-drive single in the fifth.

He’s now batting .242 in Spring Training.
