Former Pirate, Super Bowl champ promoted within New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office

by | Mar 14, 2025

A former East Carolina football player who went on to the NFL and won a Super Bowl has been promoted within his current job.

Jay Ross signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2010 after finishing his career at ECU. He ended up with the Green Bay Packers and won a Super Bowl later that season. That’s the same team that had C.J. Wilson, another former ECU football player who went to Northside High School in Beaufort County.

On Thursday, Ross was promoted to sergeant within the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. He’s a Wilmington native and played at New Hanover High School before landing at ECU.

“Jay Ross has long been a role model in our community, first as a standout high school athlete, then as a professional in the NFL, and now as a dedicated law enforcement officer,” Sheriff Ed McMahon said, according to a report from WECT. “His leadership, integrity, and commitment to the safety and well-being of our students make him the perfect choice for this role.”
