Trey Yesavage’s rise to majors continues with spot in Futures Game

by | Jul 7, 2025

Trey Yesavage has had another busy week.

We told you about the news of the former East Carolina baseball star and current Toronto Blue Jays prospect getting to pitch this coming weekend in the MLB Futures Game. Former ECU star Carson Whisenhunt, one of the top prospects for the San Francisco Giants, will also pitch in the game.

In addition, Yesavage had two starts for Double-A New Hampshire against Portland. Although they were not his best outings, it all adds up to showcase the work he’s done to get to that level of ball.

And he may not be done there this season.

MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson, who writes about the Blue Jays, broke down the success Yesavage and the entire Toronto Blue Jays organization are having. While it’s unlikely Yesavage will be called up to the majors this season to help the Blue Jays in the postseason, Blue Jays General Manager Ross Atkins didn’t shoot the idea down.

“Fifteen years ago, I would have said, ‘Probably not.’ That’s a lot to ask,” Atkins said. “In today’s game, because of how strong the amateur game has become and how much they’ve improved at development, it is more realistic for these guys to transition to the Major Leagues at a very rapid rate. Having said that, that’s not our focus.

“Our focus is for him to build a foundation and to be a Major League starting pitcher for 10-plus years, which is so hard to do. That will be the backdrop of our focus, but we’re not closing doors to contributions from significant impact players in our system.”

He’s unfortunately had his worst two outings of the season this week against Portland.

In Sunday’s 10-5 win by New Hampshire over Portland, Yesavage started strong in the first two innings, giving up a hit and striking out three. However, he was pulled after three innings after he gave up three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

On Tuesday, New Hampshire also got the win. However, Yesavage only went 2.1 innings, giving up four runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
