Annie Kate Dalton and Gabby Fowler both hit grand slams as East Carolina defeated Memphis in five innings, 17-1, on Saturday afternoon at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium.

Logan Sutton also added a home run for the Pirates (22-16, 8-6 AAC) who scored 17 runs in a game for the first time since Feb. 26, 2022 and the 17 runs are tied for most runs scored in a game in the Shane Winkler era. It was also the first time since Apr. 25, 2015 that ECU hit two grand slams in the same game.

The Pirates wasted little time, scoring seven runs in the first inning capped off by Fowler’s first career home run. Sutton hit a solo shot in the top of the second to extend ECU’s lead to 8-0 and the Pirates ended the second inning with a 15-0 lead after Dalton’s grand slam and Chloe Geijer’s RBI single.

Dalton plated another run in the bottom of the third and Morgan Johnson’s sac fly scored Hannah Evans to make the score 17-0 as the team went into the fourth inning.

Memphis avoided the shutout after a single and a Pirate error allowed a Tigers’ runner on base to score in the top of the fourth. The Pirates would not let Memphis score another run the rest of the way as ECU took the series with run-rule victory.

Taylor Apple (9-7) picked up the win in the circle in three innings of work while Jordan Hatch pitched two innings in relief.
