FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jordan Riley scored a career-high 28 points on 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc but East Carolina fell, 67-58, to St. Bonaventure on Thanksgiving Day in its second and final game of the Fort Myers Tip-Off at Suncoast Credit Union Arena.
Tybo Bailey added 10 points for the Pirates (2-5) who have dropped four in a row.
Frank Mitchell and Daniel Egbuniwe each scored 17 points to lead St. Bonaventure (6-1).
Riley got the Pirates on the board with a three at the 19:19 mark, marking the second straight game that ECU’s first basket of a game was a three-pointer. Bailey’s three-point play and another Riley three-pointer kept the Pirates’ offense going but the Bonnies went into the first media timeout shooting 6-of-6 from the floor and holding a 13-9 lead.
St. Bonaventure’s lead grew to seven by the next media timeout as the Pirates went scoreless and committed four turnovers in a three-minute span. The Bonnies maintained their seven-point lead with 3:40 remaining in the first half at 26-19 as the Pirates’ offense stalled again, going 4:23 without a field goal.
East Carolina regained the lead down the stretch of the first half with an 8-0 spurt capped by two free throws from Caulker and the Pirates held a 29-28 lead going into the break.
After Riley’s jumper opened the second half scoring, St. Bonaventure scored six unanswered to go in front 34-31 with 17:25 remaining. The teams traded leads for a brief period but another Pirate field goal drought allowed the Bonnies to take a 47-42 lead but Bailey’s second and-one of the day pulled ECU within two at the eight-minute mark.
The Pirates went back in front, 49-48, on a layup from Riley at the 6:54 mark of the second half but St. Bonaventure would take a 56-51 lead after Mitchell’s layup with 2:44 remaining. ECU pulled within two on Riley’s fourth triple of the game but a dagger three from Egbuniwe with the shot clock running out at the 1:50 mark would be enough to give St. Bonaventure the win.
