WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jordan Riley scored a team-high 19 points but East Carolina fell at Trask Coliseum to UNCW, 85-60, on Tuesday evening.
Tybo Bailey added 10 points as the only other double-figure scorer for the Pirates (2-2) who were unable to overcome UNCW’s 14 made threes and foul trouble to key players.
Christian May led the Seahawks (3-1) with 22 points and was one of four UNCW players in double figures.
After the Seahawks jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, the Pirates hit three of their next seven shots including a three-pointer from Bailey and Isaiah Mbeng to knot the game at 11 with 13:21 to go in the first half. Three straight threes from ECU put the Pirates ahead 20-15 but the Seahawks outscored the Pirates 23-6 over an eight-minute span to take a 38-26 lead with two minutes to go before halftime.
Corey Caulker hit a pullup at the buzzer but the Pirates went into the break down 42-30.
UNCW opened the second half scoring with a three from Noah Ross to go ahead by 15 after getting three opportunities to score and the Seahawks’ lead would swell to as much as 19 after another triple, this time from May.
May and the Seahawks continued their second-half onslaught with a barrage of threes that pushed the Seahawks’ lead to 28 as UNCW cruised to the win.
